Bipartisan call to help transform California’s most disadvantaged communities

(Sacramento) – Assemblymember Dr. Joaquin Arambula (D – Fresno) and Mayor Ashley Swearengin (R – Fresno) testified before the California State Assembly Budget Committee today to encourage increased investment of Greenhouse Gas Reduction Funds in Fresno, which has the highest concentration of disadvantaged communities in the state.

“More than two thirds of the neighborhoods in Fresno are at poverty or extreme poverty levels, and changing those conditions will take deliberate action and a strong public-private partnership,” said Mayor Swearengin. “We need a catalyst for further investment that will help struggling cities overcome obstacles and bring new life to our most vulnerable communities.”

Health disparity data, medical interpreters are key asks of Budget Subcommittee

(SACRAMENTO) – Newly elected Assemblymember Dr. Joaquin Arambula (D – Fresno) is requesting budget funding for a program intended to identify health disparities by race, ethnicity and language data.

“I’ve seen firsthand the health disparities that exist,” said Dr. Arambula. “The data we collect will help guide future solutions to this major medical issue.”

Local Emergency Room Physician to Focus on Healthcare, Water, Jobs

(SACRAMENTO)—Dr. Joaquin Arambula (D-Fresno) took the oath of office to serve as the Assemblymember of the 31st District today in a brief ceremony on the Floor of the California Assembly.

“It is an honor to represent the Central Valley,” said Dr. Arambula. “I intend to be a true public servant, and listen more than talk. Most importantly, every decision I make will be in light of the needs of the constituents I am so proud to represent.”

“Dr. Arambula has dedicated his life to serving his community – first as an emergency room physician, and now as a member of the Assembly,” said Speaker Anthony Rendon (D-Paramount). “Representing a district that shares many of the challenges Dr. Arambula’s constituents face, I know he will be an effective and dedicated advocate for the people of the Valley.”

After a bruising special election campaign brought on by the resignation of his predecessor in the Assembly, Dr. Arambula won the seat outright without the need for a runoff.

In the Assembly, Dr. Arambula will focus on expanding access to clean water, increasing the amount of water available for farms, and ensuring that everyone has the right to quality and affordable medical care.

Dr. Arambula was born and raised in the San Joaquin Valley, where he attended Fresno public schools. Later he completed medical school, and returned to his home community to practice medicine as an emergency room physician in the City of Selma. He lives in Kingsburg with his wife, Elizabeth, and their three daughters.

Dr. Joaquin Arambula is sworn in by Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon. Looking on are his three daughters and wife, Elizabeth. Arambula now represents the 31st Assembly District. The seat has been vacant due to the resignation of former Assemblyman Henry T. Perea.
