Assemblymember Arambula’s Bill 263 Passes Through Assembly; Seeks to Ensure Public Health Safety Measures for Detainees and Workers in Private Detention Centers

SACRAMENTO, CA – Today, Assembly Bill 263, the Health Oversight and Leadership in Detention Act authored by Assemblymember Dr. Joaquin Arambula (D-Fresno), passed off the Assembly Floor. The bill passed with bipartisan support, obtaining more than the 54 votes required for an urgency measure. AB 263 focuses on ensuring public health and worker safety in private detention facilities and has garnered support from public health and community-based organizations. 

Assemblymember Arambula Introduces First-of-its-Kind Life Data Bill to Collect Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Data as Part of Violent Death Investigations

SACRAMENTO, CA — February 22, 2021 — Assemblymember Dr. Joaquin Arambula (D-Fresno) announced today the introduction of the LGBTQ Violent Death Data Collection Pilot Program (AB 1094), which would equip coroners and medical examiners in six participating counties across California with the training necessary to identify and collect data on an individual’s sexual orientation or gender identity (SOGI) in cases of violent death, including homicide and suicide. The legislation would provide California with much-needed data to track violent deaths among the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer & questioning (LGBTQ) community and to help deploy resources and shape policies that may reduce the number of these preventable deaths in the future.
