FRESNO, CA – Assemblymember Dr. Joaquin Arambula (D-Fresno) today responded to Governor Gavin Newsom’s proposed revised budget of $300.6 billion for fiscal year 2022-23:

“My staff and I are going through the details of the May Revise, but I want to express my profound gratitude to Governor Newsom for reconfirming his commitment from January to expand full scope Medi-Cal to income-eligible adults 26 to 49, regardless of immigration status. This is the critical last step to ensure that every eligible individual in California can obtain Medi-Cal coverage and will transform the lives of hundreds of thousands of people – especially people in our most vulnerable communities who for years have paid their share of taxes and contributed to the strength of our State’s economy. The COVID-19 pandemic, which disproportionately killed and harmed Latinos and other ethnic minorities, cast an ugly spotlight on the inequities in our health care system.

“Today, I celebrate this milestone with many health and immigration advocates, who have championed this compassionate and just cause for years. However, we also want to make sure that young adults turning 26 during the transition remain covered. And, we still want Assembly Bill 4, which I authored and is the legislative guarantee of this coverage, to be signed into law.”
