Kingsburg Democrat Joaquin Arambula sworn in to state Assembly

Kingsburg Democrat Joaquin Arambula hadn't officially won his 31st Assembly District race, but that didn't stop him from becoming an official member of the California Legislature.

Newly minted Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon swore in Arambula on Thursday morning. A few hours later, Fresno County Clerk Brandi Orth certified the election, making Arambula's win official.

SACRAMENTO - It's been six years since former Assemblymember Juan Arámbula, a Democrat-turned-independent who represented the 31st Assembly District from 2004-10, returned to the state Capitol to witness an event he never thought he would live to see.

His 38-year-old son, Dr. Joaquín Arámbula, was standing in the Assembly chambers, accompanied by his wife and three young daughters, waiting to be sworn in as the newest member of the Assembly.

A little more than a year ago, Joaquin Arambula stumbled out of the political starting gate in his quest for the 31st Assembly District seat, saying he was a Democrat living in Kingsburg. At the time, he was neither. He was registered as an independent and living in Clovis.

On Tuesday, Arambula showed what a difference 13 months makes.
