Assemblymember Arambula Introduces First-of-its-Kind Life Data Bill to Collect Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Data as Part of Violent Death Investigations

SACRAMENTO, CA — February 22, 2021 — Assemblymember Dr. Joaquin Arambula (D-Fresno) announced today the introduction of the LGBTQ Violent Death Data Collection Pilot Program (AB 1094), which would equip coroners and medical examiners in six participating counties across California with the training necessary to identify and collect data on an individual’s sexual orientation or gender identity (SOGI) in cases of violent death, including homicide and suicide. The legislation would provide California with much-needed data to track violent deaths among the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer & questioning (LGBTQ) community and to help deploy resources and shape policies that may reduce the number of these preventable deaths in the future.

Assemblymember Arambula Responds to the U.S. Supreme Court Decision to Block the Citizenship Question

(SACRAMENTO, CA) – Assemblymember Dr. Joaquin Arambula (D-Fresno) today issued a statement in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s 5-4 decision to block, for now, the Trump administration’s attempt to add the citizenship question to the 2020 census.

“I am grateful that the U.S. Supreme Court has blocked the Trump administration’s move to add a citizenship question to the 2020 census. The inclusion of that question is unnecessary and could cripple the massive effort to attain a correct count in California. This is especially true in the 31st District that I represent, which is home to populations that are difficult to count, including immigrants, young children, and communities of color.
