FRESNO – Assemblymember Dr. Joaquin Arambula (D-Fresno) will be part of a Town Hall this Thursday, April 24, to discuss the proposed CEMEX Rockfield Expansion on the San Joaquin River and his Assembly Bill 1425 that seeks to protect the river.

The Town Hall will be held at the San Joaquin River Parkway and Conservation Trust’s River Center Barn, 11605 Old Friant Road, Fresno 93730. The venue will open at 5 p.m. for the event, with the Town Hall starting at 6 p.m. Admission is free.

CEMEX, an international mining company, is requesting a 100-year extension to expand its operations on the San Joaquin River, including plans to blast and drill a 600-foot pit to extract rock for the purpose of making gravel. The site is northeast of the city of Fresno.

The CEMEX proposal currently is going through its application process through the Fresno County Public Works and Planning Department. The period for public comment to the county on the Draft Environmental Impact Report recently closed.

Assemblymember Arambula has authored Assembly Bill 1425, which seeks to safeguard and preserve the San Joaquin’s unique wildlife and natural habitat for the community and future generations. Many people are concerned the CEMEX plan could contaminate the river, harm wildlife, and adversely impact people and families who live in the area.

Assemblymember Arambula said: “I look forward to discussing the CEMEX proposal as well as providing information about AB 1425 at this Town Hall. It’s important that we hear and listen to what members of the community and others have to say about this proposal.
