FRESNO, CA – Assemblymember Dr. Joaquin Arambula (D-Fresno) today responded to Governor Gavin Newsom’s $297 billion State budget proposal for fiscal year 2023-24:

“Governor Newsom today presented a proposed $297 billion budget that reflects the resilience and fortitude of our State, even as we must deal with an estimated $22.5 billion deficit. The proposed plan illustrates the thoughtful and deliberate fiscal responsibility undertaken by the State Legislature and Governor to forge budgets that ensure protecting our most vulnerable Californians through the turmoil of economic uncertainty.

“I deeply appreciate that Governor Newsom again fully committed to the expansion of full scope Medi-Cal access to income-eligible adults ages 26 to 49, regardless of immigration status. The funding stays in the budget as the State prepares to start the program next January. This was the last age group to obtain access to this coverage that will be, in a word, transformative for these people and the families who depend upon them.

“The proposed plan also includes commitments to workforce development, education, behavioral health, public safety, and more. I look forward to the diligent and hard work ahead to establish a budget that is fiscally responsible but continues to improve the quality of life for all Californians.”
